I presume you have 2 teachers and you both do coursework from Sept-Dec? Then, would you split the exam side equally from Jan-May. We do this already because we see our students 5 times a fortnight. But because this is changing, one teacher will have to teach coursework and the other the exam. So if the students read their texts in the summer holidays, what happens in your lessons when the come back? You briefly go over the texts - how long does this usually take?

I allow some time in school to type while I do tutorials but also some at home. I love the title by the way - sounds really interesting.
We let our students have free choice, but obviously with guidance. Only one teacher does coursework and the other does exam texts. Like patsworth, the coursework teacher moves on to the exam practice and the unseen questions when coursework is being marked.
In September, our students come back and some will have read the first exam text. I have a checklist of themes, criticism and contextual information I want to go through and I bring it in as appropriate. Then they finish reading over Christmas. From now on all AS and A2 essays are in class with coursework being done at home.
In a good year, it all goes well and most students put in a lot of work. In a bad year, they have to be dragged through the texts and teachers end up doing most of the work. We take our classes through from AS to A2 so whatever we start in June is continued when they come back.
